"Reduce Plastic Action" is an event showcasing green initiatives on Earth Day, April 22nd. It encourages faculty, staff and students to take a photo or record a video of themselves taking plastic-reduce action. Participants are asked to upload their photo or video to Instagram and tag the official account of NCU. This is meant to demonstrate real actions to reduce plastic usage and to inspire others through the messages. The event received enthusiastic responses from many students, and similar activities related to plastic-reduction will be held irregularly in the future to promote a green lifestyle and initiatives in NCU.
NCU has been promoting the action of turning off lights during 1-hour lunch break since 2021. This initiative has received widespread support from various administrative offices. This year, to promote and take actions in the "Lights Off, Love Earth" campaign, faculty, staff and students are encouraged to turn off lights for one hour each day for five consecutive days during Apr/22-26. Through experiencing one hour without lighting, participants can gain a deeper understanding of the importance of energy in daily life, and make improvement in energy usage habits.
Offices or individuals participating in the activity are required to take photos and upload them as per the requirements of the Office of Sustainability and Social Responsibility, NCU. Over the five-day event, a total of approximately 50 administrative and academic offices and individuals showed their supported to this activity. Based on the carbon reduction benefits collected from this activity, if every office and classroom on campus actually turns off the lights for one hour every day, it is estimated that the annual carbon dioxide emission reduction would reach 30 to 40 tons at least, roughly equivalent to 1/10 of the carbon absorption capacity of Da-an Forest Park in a year.
Through participating in the above activities, faculty, staff and students of NCU have shown their care for the Earth, sharing and demonstrating their green initiatives on social media, inspiring more people to participating in plastic-reducing actions. Through the action of turning off lights for one hour every day, faculty, staff and students of NCU had felt the importance of energy conservation and carbon reduction, demonstrating continued initiative and implementing the spirit of sustainable development, and making concerted efforts to make the Earth a more suitable living environment!
