"Self-directed learning" is a ramping-up issue among universities, while NCU taking the lead in promoting "micro-course" system that allows students to plan their own course. By integrated with student communities, students can have more diversity, flexibility and ability to customize their own learning content.
According to NCU, micro-courses encourages students to earn credits from extra-curricular learning. Unlike specialties they obtain from majors, NCU hope that students from different fields can use their spare time to collaborate, to develop ideas and complete works together, which makes micro-course the best bridge for cross-disciplinary collaboration.
6 years ago, NCU began planning a virtual "College of Interdisciplinary Innovation and Entrepreneurship", and set up ideaNCU creative spaces in General Education Building, Teaching & Research Building, and Colleges. A total of 55 creative spaces on campus provide spaces for cross-disciplinary communication and hands-on learning for teachers and students. In the past 6 years, there have been 56 communities, 32 proposals to off-campus competitions, with a total of $2.57 million in prizes and 3 entrepreneurial teams.
In 2022, the Office of Academic Affairs had level-up the scale of comprehensive exhibition to show the achievements of cross-disciplinary student teams, including creative programs, micro-programs, micro-courses, and student communities.
