Under the theme of "Humanistic Care and Sustainable Development," National Central University (NCU) has made significant strides in sustainability, addressing university social responsibility (USR), humanistic care, and the development of a green, low-carbon campus. These efforts earned NCU the Sustainable University Excellence Award at the inaugural Taiwan Sustainable University Awards, organized by the Taiwan Institute for Sustainable Energy.
NCU's Sustainable Development and Social Responsibility Committee coordinates campus-wide initiatives, focusing on resilience, carbon inventories, and energy conservation. In 2023, NCU achieved a carbon reduction of 240,756 kg CO2e and implemented renewable energy projects with a solar installation capacity of 4,000 kWp and 32,061 watts of self-generated green energy. These efforts are complemented by nudge strategies to encourage sustainable campus behaviors.
Academically, NCU launched the College of Sustainability and Green Energy in 2023, bridging academia and industry to cultivate sustainability talent. Its courses, interdisciplinary programs, and self-learning communities empower students to address real-world challenges. Faculty and students collaborate with local communities on USR projects, creating localized sustainability frameworks.
Beyond campus, NCU works with industries, communities, and global partners to preserve public assets like Hakka culture and stone weir ecosystems. It also promotes resilient communities and eco-tourism in Fuxing District, aligning with Taiwan’s net-zero goals.
NCU aspires to continue driving sustainable development, fostering collaborations with governments and communities to implement impactful, multi-tiered actions for a sustainable future.
